OVERVIEW

Gossypium barbadense - Sea Island cotton This brushy tropical plant has hypotensive (blood pressure lowering) effect and antifungal properties.
It is also one of the safest and most certain herbal abortifacients (substance that causes pregnancy to end prematurely and causes an abortion).
Other uses are: as an emmenagogue (menstruation stimulant), a substitute for ergot (fungus that procedure certain alkaloids used in medicine) and to check hemorrhage (bleeding).
Flower buds are used by the Amerindians for earache. The leaves are used against parasites and to eliminate filariasis* (filaria).
Other traditional medicinal applications include the seeds that are used in dysentery. The seed oil is used to clear freckles and spots from the skin.

PHYTOCHEMICALS

Root bark contains ca 3% of a reddish acidic resin, a volatile oil, a phenolic acid (probably 2,3-dihydrobenzoic acid; salicylic acid, a colorless phenol, betaine, a fatty alcohol, a phytosterol (C27H46O), a hydrocarbon (probably triacontane), ceryl alcohol and oleic and palmitic acid. Hager's Handbook (List and Horhammer, 1969–1979) also lists isoquercitrin, quercimeritrin, quercetin-3'-glucoside, hirsutrin, isoastragalin, palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, -pinene, -caryophyllene, bisabolol, caryophyllenepoxide, bisabolenoxide, abscissin II, serotonin, chrysanthemin, gossypicyanin and histamine. Gossypol (polyphenol).

PHARMACOLOGY

Gossypium barbadense - Sea Island cotton tincture, only for US$18.65 per 2 fl oz. The blood-pressure-lowering effect of the decoction of G. barbadense leaves collected from Suriname was evaluated.
Although it is still not known which compound(s) is (are) the active substance(s), the results obtained may explain the use of this plant in Traditional Medicine of Suriname and other South American countries.

Natural gossypol (GP) is made up of two mirror image molecules.
(+)GP (plus gossypol) and (-)GP (minus gossypol).
There is ongoing research to use Gossypol as a natural alternative to vasectomy (permanent method of birth control). Gossypol has also long been known to possess anti-malarial properties.
The root, bark and the pigmented glands of the seeds contain gossypol, it is shown to be antiviral; the influenza virus is inactivated by it. Gossypol is also effective against herpes and seems to increase interferon levels naturally.
Interferons are proteins and part of the natural defense of the body.

Women use it against uterus disorders such as uterine bleeding, uterine myoma and endometriosis (painful disorder, tissue that lines the inside of the uterus grows outside of it).

Gossypol (actually a yellow pigment) extracted from the root and seed), has demonstrated in vitro effects on cell cycle regulation and anti-tumor activity against mammary carcinoma cell lines. The cell cycle regulatory effects of gossypol suggest a potential role for gossypol as a modulating agent in conjunction with other cell cycle specific compounds.

According to Chinese studies, gossypol is effective as a non-hormonal male contraceptive; however, it has been found to have irreversible effects on male fertility. It is now being studied for clinical applications in cancer therapies.
It has been tested for use against prostate and other cancers.
A study of the effect of gossypol on the growth of human androgen-independent prostate cancer cell line (PC3) showed gossypol to be a potent inhibitor of prostate cancer cell growth.
Gossypol has demonstrated in vitro effects on cell cycle regulation and anti-tumor activity against mammary carcinoma cell lines.

The natural form of gossypol has been extensively tested in humans and is well tolerated for long-term use.
Using the more active form, (-)GP for example, in combination with radiation or chemotherapy, it may soon find its new role in the fight against cancer.
