OVERVIEW
This brushy tropical plant has hypotensive (blood pressure lowering) effect and antifungal properties.It is also on of the safest and most certain herbal abortifacients (substance that causes pregnancy to end prematurely and causes an abortion). Other uses are as an emmenagogue (menstruation stimulant), a substitute for ergot (fungus that procedure certain alkaloids used in medicine) and to check hemorrhage (bleeding). Flower buds are used by the Amerindians for earache. The leaves are used against parasites and to eliminate filariasis (filaria*). Other traditional applications include the seeds that are used in dysentery. The seed oil is used to clear freckles and spots from the skin. PHYTOCHEMICALS Root bark contains ca 3% of a reddish acidic resin, a volatile oil, a phenolic acid (probably 2,3-dihydrobenzoic acid; salicylic acid, a colorless phenol, betaine, a fatty alcohol, a phytosterol (C27H46O), a hydrocarbon (probably triacontane), ceryl alcohol and oleic and palmitic acid. Hager's Handbook (List and Horhammer, 1969–1979) also lists isoquercitrin, quercimeritrin, quercetin-3'-glucoside, hirsutrin, isoastragalin, palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, -pinene, -caryophyllene, bisabolol, caryophyllenepoxide, bisabolenoxide, abscissin II, serotonin, chrysanthemin, gossypicyanin and histamine. Gossypol (polyphenol) PHARMACOLOGY The blood-pressure-lowering effect of the decoction of G. barbadense leaves collected from Suriname was evaluated. Although it is still not known which compound(s) is (are) the active substance(s), the results obtained may explain the use of this plant in traditional medicine in Suriname. There is ongoing research to use Gossypol as an alternative to vasectomy.Gossypol has also long been known to possess anti-malarial properties. The root, bark and the pigmented glands of the seeds contain gossypol, it is shown to be antiviral, influenza virus is inactivated by it. Gosssypol is effective against herpes. DOSAGE Infusion: 1 - 3 cups daily.
